Coaching Staff ASSISTANT SPECIAL TEAMS 7th season in NFL ■ 1st season with Raiders Tracy Smith enters his first season with the Raiders, serving as the team’s assistant special teams coach. He is entering his seventh NFL season in 2015. Smith joins Oakland after spending the previous three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, assisting current Raiders and former 49ers special teams coordinator Brady Seely on one of the top units in the NFL. During that time span, the 49ers ranked in the top 10 in field goals made (ninth, 86) and opponents punt return average (ninth, 8.3). San Francisco also ranked in the top five in net punting average (fourth, 41.3) and gross punting average (third, 47.5). Last season, the 49ers special teams unit was led by K Phil Dawson and P Andy Lee. Dawson connected on 25-of-31 field goal attempts, including the second-most made field goals in the league of 50-or-more yards (six). He also became one of 19 players in NFL history to surpass 1,500 points scored for his career. Lee finished the season with the sixth-highest punting average (46.8) in the NFL. In 2013, San Francisco’s specials teams unit ranked second in the NFL according to The Dallas Morning News’ Rick Gosselin’s annual special teams rankings. Dawson set a franchise record with 27 consecutive field goals made. Dawson also set singleseason QUALITY CONTROL - DEFENSE 4th season in NFL ■ 4th season with Raiders 38 Gameday MAGAZINE career highs with 140 points, 44 made PATs and 32 made field goals. Lee ranked third in the NFL with a 48.2 gross punting average and fourth in net punting average (41.7). The 49ers fielded one of the strongest special teams units in the NFL in 2012. Lee led the NFL with 43.2 net punting average, while also ranking fifth in the league with a 48.0 gross punting average, on his way to All-Pro honors. San Francisco also led the NFL in starting field position (31.8-yard line) and ranked second in the NFL in opponents starting field position (24.9-yard line). Smith spent the 2011 season with the Seattle Seahawks as a coaching assistant. Prior to joining the Seahawks, Smith served as a special teams assistant with the Cleveland Browns, working under Brad Seely. Before making the jump to the NFL, Smith served as the tight ends coach at Utah State from 2006-08. Smith spent 2005 as the offensive graduate assistant at LSU. In his position, he worked with the Tiger quarterbacks. Prior to coaching at LSU, Smith was a restricted earnings coach working with tight ends and serving as the team’s video coordinator at Stephen F. Austin. Tracy Smith Travis Smith enters his fourth year with the Raiders and first as quality control - defense. He previously served as a defensive assistant from 2012-14. Smith has worked extensively with the linebacker corps since joining the Silver and Black. Last year, Smith helped tutor rookie LB Khalil Mack. Oakland’s firstround (fifth overall) selection in the 2014 NFL Draft, Mack finished third in the voting for the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year. He was also named to the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-Rookie Team. For the season, Mack finished with 75 tackles (59 solo) and four sacks, as he became the third Raider linebacker to start all 16 games his rookie season. Mack was also the only rookie named to the 2014 USA Football All-Fundamentals Team, which honors 26 NFL players who exhibit exemplary football techniques for young players to emulate. In addition, LB Sio Moore notched a career-high 112 tackles. In 2013, Smith helped a revamped unit that included three new starters in veteran LBs Nick Roach and Kevin Burnett and rookie Moore. Roach played every snap at middle linebacker and posted career highs in tackles (152) and sacks (5.5), while Moore was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team after recording 4.5 sacks in his first season. Smith joined the Raiders after spending the previous two years in the collegiate ranks. Smith was an offensive technical intern at Colorado in 2011. He coached at Santa Monica (Calif.) Junior College in 2010, assisting the tight ends and the defensive linemen. He also served as an undergraduate assistant coach at Cal Poly. travis Smith
