Connections: • General Manager Reggie McKenzie was a linebacker with the Cardinals from 1989-90, where he played with Cardinals running backs coach Stump Mitchell (running back/return specialist) in 1989. • Wide receivers coach Rob Moore finished his playing career with seven seasons (1995-2001) as an Arizona Cardinal. Moore later worked as wide receivers coach at Phoenix (Ari.) Junior College in 2009. • DT Dan Williams joined the Raiders in 2015 after five seasons (2010-14) with the Arizona Cardinals. • DT Ricky Lumpkin originally signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and spent most of his three seasons (2011-13) in Arizona on the practice squad, appearing in one game in 2012. • Cardinals QB Carson Palmer played two seasons (2011-12) with the Raiders, appearing in 25 games with 24 starts in the Silver and Black. • Cardinals DE LaMarr Woodley played for the Raiders in 2014, starting 5-of-6 games played. • Cardinals T Jared Veldheer was originally a third-round pick (69th overall) of the Raiders in the 2010 NFL Draft and went on to start 48-of-53 games in Oakland from 2010-13. • Cardinals DE Matt Shaughnessy played for the Raiders from 2009-12, totaling 15.5 sacks over his four seasons in Oakland. • Cardinals linebackers coach Bob Sanders held the same position with the Raiders from 2013-14. • Cardinals cornerbacks coach Kevin Ross coached safeties with the Raiders from 2010-11. • Cardinals OLB Lorenzo Alexander was born in Oakland, Calif. and attended Saint Mary’s College High School in Berkeley, before playing at Cal from 2001-04. • Cardinals RB Stepfan Taylor attended Stanford from 2009-12 and rushed for 40 touchdowns in his career, while DE Josh Mauro played at Stanford from 2010-13. • Cardinals S Deone Bucannon is a Fairfield, Calif. native and attended Vanden High School • Team travel and logistics coordinator Pete Caracciolo’s brother, Matt Caracciolo, works as football operations coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals. • QB Cody Fajardo and Cardinals TE Troy Niklas were teammates at Servite High School in Anaheim, Calif., where Niklas played both guard and defensive tackle. The pair won the 2009 California state title together. • Cardinals DT Alameda Ta’amu was born in Alameda, Calif., where Raiders headquarters is located. 6 Gameday MAGAZINE Notes from Last Week: Carr Looks Deep for Cooper • In the first quarter, QB Derek Carr found rookie WR Amari Cooper deep down the right sideline for a 40-yard gain, a career preseason long for Carr, for the duo’s fourth connection of the preseason. • Carr was 2-for-2 for 52 yards on the 6-play, 75-yard touchdown drive (2:24), also hitting FB Marcel Reece for 12 yards and a first down. • Carr finished the game 4-for-8 for 78 yards, bringing his 2015 preseason total to 10-of-17 for 121 yards. • Cooper improves his preseason total to four receptions for 66 yards (16.5 avg.). “Tay Train” Gets Rolling • RB Latavius Murray had an impressive second drive, rushing three times for 17 yards including a 2-yard rushing touchdown, his second career preseason score and first of the year. • Murray totaled 20 yards on four carries in the game (5.0 avg.), bringing his 2015 preseason total to 10 carries for 55 yards (5.5 avg.) with one touchdown. Edwards Jr. and Heeney Force a Fumble • Rookie DE Mario Edwards Jr. and rookie LB Ben Heeney combined for a sack of Vikings QB Taylor Heinicke, forcing a fumble which was recovered by DE Shelby Harris for the Raiders’ second takeaway of the game. • Heeney led the team in tackling for the second straight game, posting seven tackles (three solo) with 0.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Heeney now has 15 tackles (nine), 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble this preseason. • Fellow fifth-round pick LB Neiron Ball added four stops (three) with two quarterback hits. Dowling Picks One Off • S Jonathan Dowling tracked down a deep pass from Vikings QB Shaun Hill in the second quarter for his first NFL interception in either the regular season or preseason. It marks the Raiders’ first interception of the 2015 preseason. Roberts Breaks Out • WR Seth Roberts put his speed on display in the second quarter, catching a pass from QB Christian Ponder on a crossing pattern and racing up the sideline for a 39-yard gain. Roberts also had one rushing attempt for six yards, setting up Murray’s 2-yard touchdown rush. Dyer Leads Rushing Attack • RB Michael Dyer led the team in both carries and rushing yards with 12 attempts for 45 yards (3.8 avg.).
