Auto Club Speedway 2016 NASCAR SCHEDULE MARCH 19 NASCAR XFINITY Series 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series Race MARCH 20 Auto Club 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race Opened in 1997 and located 50 miles east of Los Angeles in Fontana, California, Auto Club Speedway is the state’s premier motorsports facility, hosting more than 320 days of track activity each year. The packed schedule includes the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 400 weekend in March and numerous events held throughout the year at the Auto Club Dragway. For many years following the closing of Riverside International Raceway in 1988, Southern California sat as an untapped market for NASCAR. In fact, the state of California hosted only one NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race per year, at the Sonoma Raceway road course, near San Francisco. Racing mogul Roger Penske changed all of that in 1997 when he opened Auto Club Speedway. California native Jeff Gordon won the inaugural NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event on June 22, taking the checkered fl ag in the California 500 Presented by NAPA. Since then, Auto Club Speedway has become one of the grander stops on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit. The two-mile, D-shaped oval is one of the fastest tracks on the NASCAR schedule. Because of its proximity to Los Angeles, the speedway is also home to numerous movie shoots, television and commercial productions, photo shoots, new car testing, club racing and a variety of racing schools. In 2016, Auto Club Speedway will welcome back NASCAR to Southern California with the Auto Club 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, Ma rch 20, and the NASCAR XFINITY Series 300 race on Saturday, March 19. 10 ANTHEM MOTORSPORTS ANNUAL
