Chicagoland Speedway 2016 NASCAR SCHEDULE Hi storic Route 66 has always held a special place in the hearts of race fans and history buffs. A true symbol of an era of nostalgia, Historic Route 66 soon entered into another phase of history in 1997 when nine Joliet area entrepreneurs set out to create Route 66 Raceway, a state-of-the-art Drag Strip and Dirt Oval Track facility, along the historic road. Several years later, the increasing popularity of auto racing and the demand from loyal fans resulted in the creation of Chicagoland Speedway. Five years of painstaking effort by Tony George, International Speedway Corporation’s William C. France and nine local Joliet entrepreneurs resulted in the 1.5-mile, D-shaped oval hosting its fi rst race in 2001. On 930 acres of land, which is large enough to accommodate 42 United Centers (home of the National Basketball Association’s Chicago Bulls and the National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks), the speedway is Illinois’ largest sporting facility. In 2007, the track installed lights, making way for night racing in 2008. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series made its debut in 2009, joining the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR XFINITY Series and ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards on the track’s yearly schedule. In 2011, Chicagoland Speedway saw its annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend moved from July to September, and the track now carries the unique distinction as host to the opening round of the 10-race Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
