Clay Earles in 1947. When Earles opened the track, NASCAR had not been formed. Red Byron won the fi rst Strictly Stock event on the half-mile dirt track September 25, 1949, and went on to win the fi rst NASCAR championship that year. In 1955, the track was paved and Martinsville Speedway continued to host at least two races each year. Richard Petty won an unprecedented 15 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events at Martinsville during his career. Several other drivers have won six or more races at the track, including six-time champion Jimmie Johnson. At 0.526 of a mile in length, Martinsville Speedway is the shortest track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule, but it’s one of the biggest when it comes to action. The track has two 800-foot straightaways hooked together by short, tight and almost fl at turns with only 12 degrees of banking. The demanding layout consistently produces some of the wildest, most entertaining racing each season. Today, Martinsville Speedway holds the legacy of being the only charter-member track that remains on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. 58 ANTHEM MOTORSPORTS ANNUAL
