Drivers like Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones and the Unsers soon came to love the one-mile paved oval with the unique bend in the backstretch. And, they really loved coming to Phoenix, where the tourism industry was starting to grow and its western-style hospitality was second to none. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing came to PIR in 1988, and that event helped turn auto racing in Phoenix into a major sporting attraction for the “Valley of the Sun.” New racing legends and legends-in-the-making like Davey Allison, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace and the rest of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stars found out fi rsthand what their open-wheel brethren had known for years: Phoenix International Raceway is truly a great place to race, both for the drivers and the fans. In 2011, Phoenix International Raceway completed its fi rst repaving project since 1990. With the track’s new confi guration and its distinction as the only track in the West to host two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event weekends annually, Phoenix International Raceway has a tradition that is unique among NASCAR tracks. This year, 2016, will see not only the two traditional NASCAR race weekends, but also the addition of a Verizon IndyCar Series race under the lights on Saturday, April 2. With NASCAR and INDYCAR on the schedule, PIR will have something for just about every race fan this year. 70 ANTHEM MOTORSPORTS ANNUAL
