Each year, drivers and fans alike come to Richmond International Raceway for some of the best racing action anywhere. Racing began in Richmond in 1946, when Ted Horn drove a champ car to victory over a half-mile dirt track at Strawberry Hill Speedway. Five years after NASCAR was founded in 1948, the sanctioning body staged a race in its NASCAR Grand National Division (now the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series) at Atlantic Rural Exposition Fairgrounds on April 19, 1953. Since that fi rst NASCAR race in Richmond in 1953, the track has undergone three name changes, four confi guration changes and one surface change, from dirt to asphalt. Richmond is the only track remaining on the NASCAR premier series circuit measuring 3/4-mile in length. Lights were also added to the facility in 1991, and the racing world has enjoyed some of the most exciting night racing ever since. Home of the “One Last Race to Make the Chase,” the fi nal event of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ “regular season,” Richmond’s September race has become one of the most anticipated and exciting NASCAR events each year. It’s the fi nal chance for drivers in the hunt to secure a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and get their name on the Chase Grid. RIR’s unique layout produces tremendous side-by-side racing, while allowing drivers to reach speeds high enough to give it a superspeedway feel. That rare combination allows for the beating and banging that fans love, with the drivers’ skill playing a major role in winning. Richmond has seen second- and third-generation NASCAR drivers celebrate in Gatorade Victory Lane. The families with such a distinct honor include the Pettys, Allisons, Jarretts and Earnhardts. 78 ANTHEM MOTORSPORTS ANNUAL
